Memorial to Gary Luker

We are all saddened to advise that we lost a Member, Gary Luker, on Tuesday December 2, 2008. Gary, age 59, a retired photographer from the NYO of the FBI, was hit by a car that turned left in front of him while Gary was riding his motorcycle about 8:40PM, returning from a meeting of Florida XV, Blue Knights, Inc., in New Port Richey, just north-west of Tampa.

Gary worked in the FBI from 1976 to 2005, when he retired after 30 years of service. He and his wife, Jean, nee Michaud, who had also been a secretary in the FBI in the 70s, moved to Pasco County about three  years ago, to be closer to their three sons and families. Gary also leaves three grandchildren and extended family members, including several devoted nieces and nephews, who considered him a father figure.

Gary, as a charter member of the Evidence Response Team (ERT) in FBI, was a first-responder to the World Trade Center on 9/11.  As a charter member of the FBI's Evidence Response Team (ERT) he immediately left the NYO that morning and proceeded to the scene to begin assisting.  He worked tirelessly, as did others, assisting and subsequently taking hundreds of photos. Unfortunately, Gary did not  wear a mask over the following three weeks, resulting in his having his thyroid removed after moving to Florida, and last June he had three benign tumors removed from his brain. These episodes are attributed to his 9/11 work.

Once Gary retired and moved to Florida, he joined the Blue Knights, Florida Chapter XV and became a member of the Suncoast Chapter of retired Special Agents of the FBI and immediately volunteered to be photographer for both groups. Additionally, Gary’s strong Christian belief, lead him to become a member of the Faith Rider’s. It was so evident that his love of family and motorcycling intertwined his life and relationships that a tremendous void is now felt throughout so many fine organizations.

Gary was a fine guy and top notch gentleman who did things without seeking recognition. He was active in his church and a dedicated family man. Prior to joining the Bureau, Gary served with the U.S. Coast Guard.  Jean, his children, his grandchildren, and all his family, will miss him dearly. His passing has left a void in our chapter.
